Synchronised skating is team-based figure skating, where 9-16 skaters learn a routine to be performed in “synchronisation” to music. Various elements such as wheels, lines, splices & circles must be incorporated into the routine, to meet international rule requirements.

AIFSC is dedicated to synchronised skating and has had multiple teams competing at the NZ Nationals Ice Figure Skating Champs over the past 20 years.

AIFSC Synchro train with multiple teams at different levels, based on skater age and skill level. Ideally a squad for each team can have up to 20 skaters This way we always have skaters “in training” and reserves. Our teams aim to compete at all local club competitions and if they qualify, NZ Nationals and ISU International Competitions.

We welcome skaters of all skill levels and all ages. Our aim is to find a team for EVERY skater.

Skaters still in skate school (must be Novice One or above) will form part of our development squad. These skaters ideally remain in skate school until they are ready to sit stroking test zero (Elementary)

This year, we have five teams training across three sessions each week…

Black Ice – Senior Synchro, Silver Ice – Mixed Age Synchro, Ice Angels – Basic Novice Synchro, Ice Pixies – Beginners, Silver Diamonds – Adult Beginners

Skate School – no test level or TC registration required, compete at skate school & club competition. No minimum number of skaters.

Elementary – (9-16 skaters) no test level or TC registration required, compete at skate school & club skate school competitions.

Novice Basic – 9-16 skaters, up to the age of 18. Stroking Test Zero (elementary) required. Highest test level, inter-bronze stroking

Novice Advanced – 9-16 skaters. Up to 15 years of age. Stroking Test One (preliminary) required.

Mixed Age – 9-16 skaters. No age requirements. Stroking Test One (preliminary) required

Junior – 9-16 skaters. Must have reached the age of 12, & no older than 18 by 1 July in the year competing. Stroking Test Two (inter-bronze) required. (Inter-Silver for Australian Competition)

Senior – 9-16 skaters. Must have reached the age of 14 & no older than 25 by 1 July in the year competing. Stroking Test Three (bronze) required.

Adult – 8-16 skaters, must be over the age of 25 by 1 July in the year of competition. Stroking Test Zero required

To skate within an AIFSC Synchro Team, skaters must belong to AIFSC. (AIFSC however, DOES NOT have to be your home club, you can belong to two clubs if necessary). Club membership is due in January of each year and this year costs $40.

To skate at club competitions & be eligible to sit stroking tests, skaters must also be “Test & Competition Registered” to the NZIFSA (New Zealand Ice Figure Skating Association).

This registration is due annually (although the fee can be paid at anytime during that year) and costs $85.

Please however, check with your coach before paying this, as if your team is entering in the skate school grade, TC registration is not required.

All synchro training except adults, is on a Saturday morning. The higher the grade, the earlier the start!

Session length will vary, depending on the grade of the team. However, our aim is to always provide both on and off ice training each week. The cost for a standard 10 week term is approximately $250-$300. Costs are also dependant (to some degree) on skater numbers and grants received.

All skaters in competitive grades are expected to train in black skating pants and AIFSC synchro jackets. Hair must be in a bun. Tight fittings plain black gloves are allowed.
